Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
