Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
